Over the winter break, Oxy will be undergoing a full overhaul of its website. Last week, our group presented the following requests to the communications department regarding information about public transportation opinions in and around Occidental.
1. Incorporating a Google Transit box on the my.oxy homepage (default set on public transit directions).
2. A revamped sustainability page (or separate website) with information for students regarding Metro discounts for college students and how to purchase Metro cards at Oxy. Information about Metro discounts and Zipcars should also be found on the "Current Students" (http://www.oxy.edu/x300.xml) page perhaps as "Metro Discounts and Car Sharing" under the Student Resources Column.
3. Including public transit directions under the "Directions" page (found at http://www.oxy.edu/x5495.xml)
We believe these requests will help boost Occidental's use of mass transit and the popularity of both the bike sharing and Zipcar programs. These suggestions are currently under review by the communications department, though they indicated a strong level of support for all of them. We should find out within the next week which suggestions will be incorporated into the new website.

That's great! I think all of those idea would be really helpful in encouraging students to use alternative means of transportation. I think that your idea for the tabs under 'current students' would be really effective.
ReplyDeleteI posted a comment about oxy being a green transportation hub on Micheal Sin's post and forgot to mention TAP cards and metro accessibility so yes, having an online presence and physical/ fiscal programs to make it easy to get passes would be great.
ReplyDeleteI think that including the Transit information really will help students use it. I think that the students would have more faith in the local Public Transit options if they see it being endorsed by the school. Just having the information out there, will hopefully convince people that Transit is a good option for getting around.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea and is the best way to get information out to the Oxy community. I am on the website all the time and think this is one way to communicate with the students. More of us need to be exposed to the great offers our school has on transportation. The availability of this information will not give a excuse to everyone to have an apathetic view towards alternative transportation.
