check out a Kill-A-Watt to learn about energy use
Members of the Occidental community can now check out a Kill-A-Watt meter from the library to measure how much energy is being used by appliances and other electronic equipment.
Prof. Snowden-Ifft is leading the Kill-A-Watt program with funding from the ASOC Renewable Energy & Sustainability Fund. Thanks also to the library for hosting the meters.

Use the comments to this post to keep track of measurements you take. It will be interesting to see what electronic devices we use on campus are the biggest energy hogs.

I measured energy use by my office computer, a Dell desktop. It used 1.52 kWh in 24 hours, so power usage of .063kW.
ReplyDeleteI also measured the energy used by my computer, a 2008 hp Pavilion laptop.
ReplyDeleteIt used 0.18 kWh in 5.75 hours
Power usage: 0.031 kW/hour
As far as "phantom" power usage goes, my laptop charger, as well as my roommate's MacBook charger, uses no energy when it is disconnected from the laptop. This is contrary to what I've been told about chargers. Did anyone else find the same thing to be true with their chargers?
the MicroFridge unit (combined mini-fridge/freezer and microwave) in my dorm room used 0.31 kWh in 12.5 hrs, so .025 kW/hour. That's a bit less than my laptop!
ReplyDeleteMy MacBook Pro used 0.48 kWh in 72 hours for an average power consumption of 0.0067 kW, 10x less than Mark's desktop! BTW it was also charging my iPhone everyday as well.
ReplyDeleteAt my desk I have a large Apple screen (30" I think) and a Time Capsule for backups. I measured those combined with my laptop and iPhone. All of them consumed 12.76 kWh in 452 hours for an average power consumption of 0.0282 kW.

ReplyDeleteI'm glad someone measured a MicroFridge unit. I just heard that these are going to be supplied to every dorm room next year. Glad to hear they are not complete power hogs.
